He subsequently enrolled at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating with his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine.   He completed five years of additional training in foot and ankle injuries and surgery, an internship at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and a foot and ankle surgical residency within the Thomas Jefferson University Health System, also in Philadelphia.   Dr. Allen also completed a fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Allen proudly holds membership in several professional organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Podiatric Medical Association, and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.   In 2001, Dr. Allen became a founding partner at Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio.
